Honey Wheat Bread

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Raise and Bake Time: 2 1/2 hours

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups scalded milk cooled to 110 degrees F
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 yeast cake (or 1 package dry yeast)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 1/3 cup melted butter (or vegetable oil)
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour

There’s nothing like fresh, warm bread just out of the oven. Making this recipe as a family gives everyone a chance to “knead” and be needed!

Directions:

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water.
  2. Add honey and stir well.
  3. Mix in whole wheat flour, salt, and melted butter.
  4. Add all-purpose flour in gradually.
  5. Knead dough for 10 minutes.
  6. When dough is smooth and elastic, place it in a well oiled bowl.
  7. Turn the dough several times in the bowl to coat the surface.
  8. Cover with a damp cloth. Let rise in a warm place until doubled in bulk, about 45 minutes.
  9. Punch down the dough.
  10. Let children shape into loaves, and place into well greased loaf pans (makes two large or six small loaves).
  11. Rise until dough is 1 to 1 1/2 inches above pans.
  12. Bake at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) for 20 to 30 minutes.

Optional:

Serve with fresh churned butter.

Pour 1/3 cup heavy cream and a pinch of salt (optional) into each butter churn (see activity from FHE Lesson "Teach Your Children About the Prophet Joseph Smith." Put on lid (with plunger handle and plunger attached). Have the children churn the cream into butter by moving plunger up and down for 10-15 min. (To churn faster remove plunger and shake.) When cream has solidified pour off excess liquid.
